Since the introduction of ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022, generative AI (GenAI) technologies have experienced rapid and widespread adoption across professional and everyday contexts. The period of 2023–2024 was characterized by extensive individual-level experimentation and organizational pilot initiatives, coinciding with rapid improvements in the underlying model capabilities, reliability, and multimodal functionality of GenAI systems. More recently, an increasing number of organizations have begun transitioning from experimentation to formal integration, adopting GenAI chatbots and GenAI-enabled systems as core enterprise applications embedded in workflows, services, and decision-making processes.

This pivotal shift signals not only technological advancement but also a transformation in managerial logic regarding how organizations conceptualize and interact with enterprise systems, allocate responsibility, and structure work. As GenAI systems move from peripheral tools to embedded components of organizational processes, existing information systems and management theories face growing difficulty in explaining how authority, judgement, and accountability are exercised when the non-human systems actively participate in work processes.

As GenAI becomes deeply intertwined with organizational activities, its role is increasingly understood not merely as a tool to support tasks but as an organizational actor capable of participating in, shaping, and in some cases leading work processes. Emerging information systems and management research highlight how organizations now delegate substantive responsibilities to GenAI, treating it as a collaborator that influences productivity, coordination, and strategic decision-making. This evolution introduces significant opportunities, such as enhanced efficiency, cost reduction, and productivity gains, while also raising concerns related to accountability, governance, oversight, human resource development, and broader socio-organizational consequences.

This Special Issue welcomes rigorous research that examines GenAI as an organizational actor and investigates how delegation to GenAI for various work processes reshapes organizational logic across multiple levels of analysis, including individuals, groups, firms, industries, and broader institutional environments. We seek to advance rigorous theoretical and empirical contributions that examine the opportunities enabled by the integration of GenAI, as well as the tensions it creates for responsibility, control, and organizational governance.

Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:

● Allocation of responsibility and accountability when organizational tasks or decisions are delegated to Generative AI systems

●Reconfiguration of organizational control, governance, and oversight structures resulting from the integration of Generative AI into routine operations

●Emergence of novel coordination mechanisms in human–AI collaboration at team, interdepartmental, and organizational levels

●Governance, accountability, and market-level implications of AI-generated outputs, predictions, and competitive actions

●Trust, transparency, and legitimacy of AI-mediated interactions with employees, customers, and external stakeholders

●Dark-side outcomes of organizational Generative AI adoption, including over-reliance, de-skilling, embedded biases, and shifting power asymmetries

●Cross-level, cross-industry, and cross-national analyses of Generative AI adoption within market-oriented organizational processes

●Generative AI as an active contributor and its effects on employee voice, dissent, psychological safety, and creative risk-taking

●Co-producing work products with Generative AI and employees’ sense of authorship, ownership, professional identity, and craftsmanship

●Employee perceptions of Generative AI’s agency, competence, and moral standing, and the implications for the delegation of authority and discretion

●Effects of Generative AI involvement in evaluation, hiring, resource allocation, and task assignment on perceived fairness, equity, and organizational trust

●Boundary conditions shaping the delegation of tasks to Generative AI, including task criticality, uncertainty, ethical sensitivity, and organizational risk tolerance

●Organizational learning dynamics, knowledge erosion, and capability shifts resulting from sustained reliance on Generative AI systems

●Institutional, regulatory, and industry-level responses to the adoption of Generative AI as an organizational actor

●Organizational dependence, vendor lock-in, and strategic vulnerability arising from deep integration of proprietary Generative AI platforms

●Redistribution of power and control among managers, employees, and external technology providers due to Generative AI adoption

●The emergence of hybrid human–AI roles and Generative AI altering job boundaries, career trajectories, and professional socialization

Across the world, the development and diffusion of digital technologies are transforming firms, industries, and economies. This digital transformation enables organizations to increase business flexibility and resilience, decrease costs, improve profitability, reduce environmental impact, enhance customer satisfaction, and deliver excellent economic and social value to stakeholders. The change driven by digital transformation is undoubtfully creating a new competitive environment for organizations across all industries.

After its introduction, organizations increasingly use artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in various ways, for example, to cut costs and enhance service quality, coordination, productivity, and efficiencies. AI technologies can deliver intelligent tools and capabilities used to solve digital transformation-related problems as well. With AI, organizations can predict consumers’ future behavior more accurately, enhance consumer engagement, and get insight. Or organizations can optimize their supply chains or automate their system.

However, our understanding of digital transformation and artificial intelligence is still less. Thus, the purpose of this special issue is to build on existing conversations in digital transformation and artificial intelligence of research and new discussions about how artificial intelligence can help organizations solve digital transformation challenges or how artificial intelligence affects digital transformation. We welcome contributions from scholars who can provide novel, theoretically rich insights into the research questions outlined in this proposal. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

The recent economic growth in Asia Pacific is noteworthy. This economic prosperity and growth is primarily driven by technological innovation brought about by world’s leading Pacific-based technology and telecommunication companies such as Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, to name a few. Furthermore, Asia Pacific-based e-Commerce giants and the Fintech startups (such as Alibaba, Tencent, Line, and Kakao) equally contribute to the economic prosperity. With this region being home to more than 60% of the world population and contributing more than 60 percent of the global growth (IMF, 2018), the rise of technology companies and technology innovation in this region come with several social, technological, business, and political implications.

On one hand, technology innovation in the region has enabled new business opportunities to flourish. For example, it facilitated the formation of new startup companies that provide various types of innovative services, such as, Go-Jek in Indonesia provides a motorcycle taxi service that includes picking-up school children, sending laundries, and delivering food. Technology innovation in the region has also facilitated market penetration to rural areas thus generating new business avenues for rural residents. Taobao villages, another good example, allows communities of rural food producers to conveniently sell their products. Other technology innovations, such as mobile payments, is transforming China into a cashless society. AI-enabled robots are now deployed in restaurants to prepare meals and serve customers; robot systems are used in logistics companies to deliver packages. On the other hand, while the use of the exiting new technology provides convenience and efficiency to our lives, it also comes with potential problems, which includes adoption barriers and acceptance, privacy and legal issues, and the adverse impacts on traditional businesses and societies. These issues need careful and systematic investigation and analysis to provide academics, practitioners, and government agencies evidence-based information about the potential benefits and risks of these technological innovations in the region.

This special issue aims to investigate IT (information technology) applications and innovation in the Asia Pacific region using both qualitative and quantitative methodology. We welcome papers that address, but are not limited to, the following issues and topics.

• Big data and its applications as well as Big Data-driven services in the region

With the continued expansion of electronic business, we are witnessing a variety of digitally driven businesses that are transforming not only the economy, but also transforming the way customers purchase and live their life. The increase in competition has also led to the emergence and enhancement of seller opportunism in its digital avatar, thus making it mandatory for online markets as well as social media to redefine their business and boundaries of interaction. On the one hand there is an emergence of new business model and on the other there is this menace of fake that is challenging online firms and forcing them to redefine their businesses. Since technology is a double edge sword, it is worthwhile to look at both the aspects of technology enabled e-businesses. Digital technology has also enabled government to participate and invite citizens to participate online and increase their say in shaping and reshaping of public policies and methods of governance. Internet of Things (IoT), which refers to “the networked interconnection of everyday objects, which are often equipped with ubiquitous intelligence”, is now being implemented to many consumer products or services and applied to many different industries. Things that are previously not much to do with the Internet connectivity are now connected to the Internet and provide ‘smart services’ to consumers of many industries.

This special issue on ‘Smart Services and Internet of Things’ focuses on the topics related to the applications of IoT to consumer products and services, which have become ‘smarter’ thanks to IoT. There are many applications of IoT that enable smart services. For example, with wearable technologies, wristwatches have become smarter (i.e., smartwatches) and have enhanced consumers’ lives in various ways (e.g., fitness tracking, health monitoring, scheduling, communications support, etc.). Smart speakers (e.g., Google Home and Amazon Echo) have improved consumers’ experience in searching information, managing time, online shopping, etc. Smart home technologies have helped us save energy consumption and have provided more comfort in everyday lives. There are many other applications of IoT and smart services applied in diverse industries, such as healthcare, agribusiness (e.g., IoT connected smart farms, vineyards, and fish-farms), tourism, and transportation, to name a few. Moreover, even many municipal and federal governments are adopting IoT to improve their citizens’ lives better and smarter (e.g., the city of Chicago). Smart services and IoT, however, present both opportunities and threats related to IT security. As more things (e.g., devices, sensors, homes, etc.) are connected to the Internet, more aspects of our lives become embedded in smart services enabled by IoT. Therefore, IT security issues with IoT and smart services would become much more important than those in conventional IT systems, since the security breaches to IoT and smart services might do serious harms to our lives.

The following questions in general could be asked and explored in this special issue. What are the impact of IoT and smart services on individuals, groups, firms, industries, or countries? What are the challenges and successes in implementing IoT on smart services in various industries? Why are some implementations of IoT and smart services more successful than others? How do people/firms adopt IoT and smart services? What are the challenges and issues related to adopting IoT and smart services? What are the key security issues for IoT and smart services? All conceptual, analytical, technical, and empirical papers are welcome as long as they develop or extend theory and provide implications to practice. We encourage all research methodologies, including simulations, text-mining, sentiment analysis, field experiments/observations, case studies, surveys, etc. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

Digital innovation has penetrated today’s society and economy. IT has substantially changed the manner in which people consume products, work in organizations, and interact with others. However, few research has explored gender differences in IT use and application. Various types of gender issues may be found in the development of digital products and services or information systmes in work places technologies are applied and employed. Some negative examples include the sexually objectified representation of women in digital games, masculine “brogramming” culture in Silicon Valley, and cyberbullying of women, to name a few. Therefore, in order to bridge gender gaps in IS development and deployment, we need to examine the gender issues of IS in organizations and society such as gender differences in social media usage patterns, gender inequalities in technology product market, or gender divide in IS workforce. In this special issue, we call for papers exploring gender issues that can arise in work environments, digital spaces, and development of digital products and services. Data analytics and the techniques of artificial intelligence have been applied to diverse business or decision problems to gain benefits and extract business insights from the various forms of data. They values for businesses, organizations and individuals by helping them make better and smarter decisions. Many consumer products with smart features such as voice recognition and environmental control have been introduced and penetrated the human life gradually. Also many services such as chatbots in customer service and roboadvisors in finance are available due to the integration of data analytics and AI. The usage of these smart products and data analytics driven products leaves digital footprint in various forms and we have an opportunity to understand the changes of human behaviour due to the introduction of the usage. To advance in helping decision making and automation for business organizations and people, a virtous cycle of data analytics and AI is needed. Data analytics is one of key parts in AI research and the usages of AI services and products will produce lots of data to be analyzed for gaining insights and making feedbacks to the services. APJIS welcomes proposals for Special Issues that are designed not only to draw attention to new emerging topics in information systems (IS) but also to encourage insightful and influential research on topics that fall within the scope of the journal.

Potential Guest Editors who would like to propose a Special Issue are invited to prepare a proposal and then submit it to the Editor-in-Chief through apjis@kmis.or.kr. Then, the Senior Editorial team will consider whether the proposal is of interest to the journal. When you submit a proposal, it needs to include at least the following: the title of the Special Issue, a brief CV of the proposed Guest Editors, a statement of the Special Issues significance for IS area, and an outline time schedule.

Once the proposal is approved, the Guest Editors are expected to actively encourage submissions based on the Call for Papers. Being invited to submit a manuscript does not mean that publication is guaranteed. The review process by which Special Issue manuscripts are handled is nearly identical to that of regular submissions to APJIS.

The Guest Editors make decisions at all stages of the reviewing process, up to the final acceptance decision, which is made by the Editor-in-Chief. The Guest Editors are expected to adhere to all APJIS guidelines, including the Statement of Editorial Policy, Code of Ethics, Instructions for Contributors, Guidelines for Reviewers and Style Guide. Submissions, which the Guest Editors find unsuited to the topic of the Special Issue, but still appropriate for APJIS in general, are transferred to the regular process, if necessary.

Once sufficient papers have been accepted for publication, the Guest Editors and the Editor-in-Chief discuss and agree on the contents and order of the Special Issue. In addition, the Guest Editors are asked to prepare an editorial introduction and submit it with accepted papers to the Editor-in-Chief. The maximum length of a Special Issue is one issue of the Journal. However, a Special Issue may be smaller depending on the number of accepted manuscripts. Guest Editors are responsible for ensuring successful completion of the Special Issue.
